In Memory of James Walker

Some tributes are written. Others simply gather quietly in the hearts of the people left behind.

When James Walker passed away unexpectedly in August 2025, just weeks after his 18th birthday, a WhatsApp group formed almost immediately. It was called the James Fan Club. By the time this post was written, it had seen over two thousand messages. That number tells you everything about the kind of person James was. What follows are the voices of the people who knew him and loved him.

Signs

Shortly after James passed, someone in the group shared this, first in Spanish, then in English:

"When you see a robin, know they are near. When you see a rainbow, know they are at peace. You are never alone as long as the world keeps showing you these signs."

It was meant as comfort. What nobody could have known was how many times the robin and rainbow would appear.

At a Christmas work party, one member of the group opened their cracker to find a robin inside. Later that same evening, a lucky dip prize turned out to be a robin trinket box. Yes, it may have been Christmas time, but it didn't start or stop there. Multiple sightings of robins flittering here and there, and rainbows it seemed forming remarkably frequent.

"Just little signs," someone noted.

And then Marshall one day saw it:

"The other morning the robin flew in and out of the shed extension two times. This just reminded me he's about."

King James

Marshall also wrote this, which says much about James affect on those who knew him:

"Administrator from his school, seen in the local pub, had such kind words last week. Lovable rogue. Never forgotten and known and loved by so many. Still coming across new pictures and videos on my phone and such smiles they bring, and memories. Wish so much he was still here playing his tricks and teasing everyone. King James xx"

A Mexican Tradition

Elizabeth Walker comes from Mexico, and the group reflected that warmth throughout, with messages in both English and Spanish.

On the Day of the Dead, 1st November, Elizabeth shared something with the group. First she explained a Mexican tradition:

"A calavera literaria is a type of playful, humorous poem traditionally written for the Day of the Dead. These poems are a fun and creative way to make light of death, always in a respectful and humorous tone. They are written about living people, imagining how La Catrina, the Lady Death, might come for them, but in a funny way."

She then shared a calavera written for Marshall. It describes a hardworking man with sharp words and a noble heart, someone Death itself would find good company.

palabras agudas, a veces molestas.
Mas bajo el humo y su humor sincero,
hay corazón noble y compañero.

"Walker querido", la flaca decía,
"tu chispa me alegra, ¡qué energía!
Si todos fueran tan buenos, tan leales,
sería más dulce venir por mortales."

💀 A Little Skull Poem for Marshall Walker 💀

In Tring, Death came to find him,
working away with great bravura.
"Alarm engineer, what a great job,
but today it's your turn, my good sir."

With smoke in the air and a beer in hand,
he told Death: "I'm going too early.
But there's work to do, leave me be,
for without my people, who will sound the alarm?"

In Carlisle he spends the weekend,
laughing with everyone, a very healthy soul.
Death laughed: "don't rush, my friend,
soon enough you'll be coming with me."

Hair thinning, glasses on,
sharp words, sometimes annoying.
But beneath the smoke and his sincere humour,
there is a noble heart and a true companion.

"Dear Walker", Death would say,
"your spark delights me, what energy!
If everyone were as good, as loyal,
it would be sweeter to come for mortals."

From the Family

"It is with deep sorrow that we share that our beloved James Walker tragically lost his life as a passenger in a car accident just a couple of weeks after his 18th birthday.

"James was big-hearted, lovable, and thoughtful. He often put others before himself without a second thought.

"Known for having the best jokes and the kind of smile that could light up a room, James brought laughter and warmth wherever he went. His generosity of spirit touched everyone fortunate enough to know him.

"Though his time with us was far too short, James left a lasting impact on the lives of his family and friends. He had a way of forming a unique and special bond with each person in his life, making everyone feel valued and cared for. His memory will live on in every laughter he inspired, every act of kindness he gave, and every heart he touched.

"He will be deeply missed but never forgotten."
